Okavango Delta, Botswana

Write a Review

The Okanango Delta is a very large inland delta formed where the Okavango River meets a tectonic trough in the central part of the basin of Kalahari. The rain and seasonal flooding of the delta attracts a very large variety of animals. Some including African Bush Elephants, African Buffalo, Cheetahs, Lions, Lechwe Antelopes, Hyenas, Giraffes, Warthogs, Zebras, and Leopards. The majority of the estimated 200,000 large mammals in and around the delta are not year-round residents. They leave with the summer rains to find renewed fields of grass to graze on and trees to browse, then they make their way back as winter approaches. Overall, the Okanango Delta in Botswana is a very harsh and unforgiving environment but even with its rapid weather changes and periodic flooding the wildlife is still enduring and beautiful. That's why this resilient location is number 46 on our list of the 50 Most Beautiful Places.
