Mu Cang Chai, Vietnam

Write a Review

Mu Cang Chai is a district of Yen Bai province. The district is located at the foot of Hoang Lien Son mountain range, at an altitude of 1,000 meters above sea level. To get to Mu Cang Chai, travelers must pass through Khau Pha Pass, which is one of four imposing passes in the northwest of Vietnam. The Mu Cang Chai Rice Fields are especially famous and stretch across the mountainside, level by level reaching up almost endlessly, with about 2,200 hectares of rice terraces total. Due to the landscape's steeply slope, the water is known to run down the mountainside instead of being absorbed by the crops so the Hmong people keep the water in place by leveling the rice fields into staggered terraces. This produces the almost staircase-like effect which has become one of northern Vietnam's most visited locations.
