Mount Bromo is an active volcano and part of the Tengger fault system, in East Java, Indonesia. At 7,641 feet it is not the highest peak of the volcanic system, but is the most well known. The fault system is one of the most visited tourist attractions in East Java because of its explosive volcanic history and current activity. The name of Bromo is derived from the Javanese pronunciation of Brahma, which is the Hindu creator god. Depending on the degree of volcanic activity, the Indonesian Centre for Volcanology and Disaster Hazard Mitigation sometimes issues warnings against visiting Mount Bromo but otherwise the area is open to guided tours and scenic hikes.
